Society today is heavily influenced
by pop culture and the spectacle of the celebrity. These celebrities have
cameras on them at all times, and the average person has become infatuated with
every aspect of the celebrity’s life. It spans from reality tv down to social
media, an attachment grows to someone who they will most likely never meet.
Celebrities therefore become a focal point of the spectacle, and helping
convince consumers they need to buy things that they don’t need in order to be
like them. Be it their lifestyles, cars, food the eat, and of great importance,
the clothes they wear.
For my semester project I would
like to analyze the idea of a celebrity’s influence on the fashion market. One
example is the ruckus which Kanye West has on the consumers of the fashion and
footwear cultures. When Kanye West wears something, it represents an
immesurable co-sign that makes people scour all parts of the internet to buy
whatever it is he is wearing. Anything with his name attached is almost always
a guaranteed sellout, like his Nike sneakers which were the cause of much
ruckus. I will be doing research on the influence that celebrity’s choice of
clothing has on social media and throughout the industry.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great topic! I love your idea and your post. Some quick things, maybe focus on the deeper aspect of this. Is it good or bad that celebrities basically control this fashion trend of young people? Is this possibly hurting the young generation?
Good luck!
This topic can go in different directions because it has so many aspects that you can go with. To start, you should look into the correlation between our generation to current trends in media right now?
ReplyDeleteI like this idea and the layers that Ben and Heewon brought to it. Celebrities bring a lot of pull especially with the younger generation, since they're more easily influenced.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm just wondering what form it will take, like a video or blog post or what?
