For my semester project, I will be choosing to analyze the effects of the athletic footwear industry on pop culture. For years, but even more so recently, sneakers have had a great impact on the way we view fashion. No longer reserved for athletes; rappers, high-end designers, and even “taste makers” have been given a chance to design or be the face of sneaker campaigns.
Sneakers
are much more than just things you put on your feet. For many, they are works
of art, for others they are a representation of a certain way of life. The Nike
Air Force 1 is nicknamed the hustler’s shoe, because drug dealers on the east
coast used to sell product on the block with them on. Similar to the AF1, the
Nike Cortez is the west coast’s dope man shoes. These iconic silhouettes have
stood the test of time and are still highly relevant in the culture today.
To
those unaware of the sneaker community, they will wander the streets of New
York City and see hundreds of kids lined up outside of a Foot Locker and
scratch their heads. These kids are most likely awaiting the latest sneaker
release, as some models and iterations of a certain sneaker are very limited.
How
is Michael Jordan’s sneaker still the number one selling basketball shoe on the
market when he hasn’t graced the court in nearly a decade? This along with many
other marketing questions will be answered. Shoes not only play a significant
role in the real world, but also in film, television, books, print magazines,
and especially on the internet.

This topic is a HUGE topic. I'm curious too in why some brands are still popular and in demand in comparison to other brands. How is that some people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars on a brand name sneaker? You should try comparing and contrasting the marketing ethics and how it is relevant to the sales compared to other less popular brand name sneakers. Looking forward for the final product !
