Semester Project - One Newark

One Newark is the name of the plan of Cami Anderson, Newarks Board of education appointed superintendent, to reform education in the city. The New Jersey state has appointed Anderson as the new superintendent, even thought she has a limited education background and no experience with urban schools. Beginning in 2014 the plan went into action, closing public schools and expanding charters. There is a central application process that automatically places children in schools regardless of their district. Many of Newark residence were not please about losing control of the school system. Parents, school principals, teachers, PTA members have all protested against the change but have been fired, threatened to be fired, or banned from the schools. Jersey Jazzman of JerseyJazzman blog claims that charter schools are being built in interest of private investors. He also reference legislation that suggests what is being done in Newark is illegal.
from Jersey Jazz mans Blog- Corey Booker is known for rescuing Newark residences but turns a blind eye on the education system

My project will document what exactly is happening in the Newark public school system. I will interview all parties of interest to gain insight from those against One Newark and those for it. The short Documentary will give a voice to the people who have hollered and scream against One Newark but still have not been heard. It will hold those in charge accountable for their promises and actions while informing everyone what the state of education in Newark looks like. I will share my video on you tube, Facebook, with the current Mayor of Newark, and NJ.com.

  1. I think this is an excellent topic to bring awareness of the issues within the education system, not just in Newark but in New Jersey. I have very little knowledge of the controversy between charter schools and public schools. I attended a public high school, and only know of one charter school in my surrounding towns. This is something that is relevant to current issues of right now. As for myself, I'm not sure of the pros and cons of the two, charter vs. public? The parents and students should demand a their voices be heard when its determining the fate of the education. A suggested action could be to get a petition going, or even the parents and students flooding their congress person and mayor's office with letters. Where there is unity there is victory.
