Proposal - M. Settles

For my semester project I will focus on the effects of mass media, from the television aspect. I will produce a short video/montage discussing television and its impact on society. In my project I will show clips from popular TV shows that had a negative or positive impact on our society in some way. The overall objective of my project is to persuade people to spend less time clicking the remote and giving recaps to every show on this season.

Television is a stable in every American household today. With the constant technological improvements, visual obsession, 24/7-entertainment, television taking top priority over family time. Television has different effects on different people, as we all know certain television shows does not affect everyone the same. Television has a much greater impact now on society than previously. TV has had a major influence on the world, changing our culture, thoughts, talk, style, attitudes, and beliefs, and how we view others TV has changed all of us in one-way or another. TV has been one of the main contributing factors responsible for us as a society being more focused on material things. Also, TV has helped to manipulate social and political conflicts, and race issues. Not to mention imposing our American culture and traditions t o other parts of the world.

TV allows for music, religion, arts, news, sports, entertainment and technology to be accessible to the masses, connecting them to the outer parts of their immediate world in the comfort of their living room. One main impact TV has had on society, is how we spend our free time, TV has become Americas past time. TV has a way to reach the old, young, rich, poor, educated and uneducated. TV has been the common denominator when it comes to the decline in education, the increase of crime and politics. Although TV gives its viewers instant access to breaking world news, TV cripples society from basic human interaction. Today, most households have a TV in every room of the house; if we’re always in front of the TV we’re not reading, playing outside, having normal conversations, sitting down to dinner as a family. TV has actually altered how we live as well as our learning pattern. Something that is constantly in our company everyday has to affect the way we live.

I can recall a time when TV actually went off, we didn’t have around the clock access schedule programming. Now, viewers have access to hundreds of channels around the clock. As a result, we open ourselves up negative influences and losing touch with out true reality. Then the audience who admire celebrity actors and artists aspire to be just like them, even when some celebrities are not positive role models. Unfortunately, younger viewers have a more difficult time separating what’s reality and what’s entertainment. TV allows for the door of mystery to be exposed between adult and child. Therefore, you have more children and teens watching violent shows and experimenting with drugs, alcohol and sex. TV tells us how to view the world, ourselves and how to think. Even though TV offers some educational and informative programming, TV does impact the future of society.
