Are you connected in today’s world of media? Media is waiting to attack us every minute of the day. Does anyone go 24 hours without some form of media? The word media is a major key aspect of our society. Today, media captures more time and attention than ever. Media is available to keep us informed, to entertain, and to sell us products. Some form of media touches our lives everyday, economically, socially and culturally.  In this rapidly growing world of technology, changes in media are happening faster than one could have anticipated. The constant development of media has an effect how our society and culture evolves.

The idea of tranmedia storytelling is fairly new to television. The term transmedia Storytelling is a practice of telling a story or narrative through various forms of media. The media form of computers, video games or films, creates their own individual contribution to the story. Transmedia storytelling allows the audience to be actively engaged through multiple platforms of the story creating a sensational experience. transmedia storytelling focuses on emotions.

In today’s world of modern technology, transmedia storytelling has become a way of life. With the slide of our finger or a click of the mouse, we start each and everyday filled with new information via text messages, emails, Facebook or Twitter. The major media companies recognized we are a society who needs to be entertained and socially connected. However, there is still a split between viewers who would like a quality television show and those who anticipate the multiplatform experience. Media companies developed a way to capitalize, making transmedia storytelling one of the biggest media craze we have seen.   We can access any media outlet from any mobile device and media companies have developed a way to capitalize making transmedia storytelling one of the biggest media craze to. The characters of on-line web shows along with popular TV shows now have social networks keeping the fans connected.

One example of a product or company using transmedia storytelling would have to be the series “Lost”. The producers of “Lost” set the bar for what’s to come in the future. The series “Lost” changed how we watched television. Lost, I believe was a perfected depiction of a narrative, displayed over multiple platforms. The weekly cliffhangers and teasers kept the audience interested thanks to the Internet, downloads, and bloggers. This allowed the audience the opportunity to discuss clues, symbol representation, and share ideas about the show with other fans leading up to the big season finale. The success of transmedia storytelling with the series “Lost” made it one the top television shows for six seasons during a time when shows are transitioning. I wasn’t a fan of the show but I can recall the excitement in conversation the following day after an episode of Lost. Co-workers would congregate first thing in the morning to discuss what happened, clues, predicting the out come of next week episode. Some would mention how they have to DVR the show, giving a second opportunity to go back and search for clues they may have missed in the first viewing. I think the show did an excellent job perceiving viewers by using the flashback technique of video.

Multimedia covers many types of media; together they create a new experience.
Multimedia is the convergence of images; words and sound once considered independent coming together developing a new technological approach how information and ideas are shared. Multimedia covers many types of media; together they create a new experience. For instance, newspapers, radio, television and film were once our main sources of media. A new kind of media forced the old style of media to adapt, establishing new levels of content and new ways of exchanging information. One example, how media is adapting and taking advantage of new opportunities readers can now access e-books on handheld devices. Multimedia comes in different formats allowing us to navigate through parts of a story using different media. Therefore the key difference between multimedia is that transmedia storytelling expands a story through movies, games and books for the consumer to get the full experience and attract new audience members. Whereas, multimedia is one story told throughout different platforms.

Also media companies of today are dollar driven taking advantage of the media convergence. Media company’s main objective is to make money. So, they have discovered that creating emotional attachment to a product produces faithful consumers. When the audience is seeking a greater experience and connection with the characters they love and yearn for a constant source of information this develops a new market for companies. The generations before them are still refusing to participate or mastering their skill level of participation.

The audience has embraced high expectations and constant changes in the world of media. Therefore, there is going to be a continued desire for consumers to receive satisfaction according to their need participate from the now generation. The now generation came into this world of multiplatform’s, by way of the Internet, social media, and sharing of information. For them it was not a transition into something new, its who and what they are.

To sum it up, participants from the old world of media will continue to provide information and entertainment to the new world of media.
