Post 3 transmedia story telling

Transmedia storytelling provides a platform for fans to be a part of a an experience, that has typically been a one person to one or one person to many.  In this age of digitization, viewers/consumers now get the opportunity to interact with producers, actors, networks, etc, and have their voice be heard.  The world of sports has seen a spike in the interaction of athletes taking cues from fans of their Twitter page and asking fans questions that give the fans the intimacy of being a part of the experience.

Transmedia has also taken a hold of the sports world.  Our readings indicate transmedia in referring to movies, but transmedia has grabbed a hold of real sport figures as well.  There are some athletes that have hundreds of thousands of followers and the line between our favorite athletes and fans has never been more tangible than it is presently.

James used transmedia to decide chalk toss and jersey number.
Superstar, global icon LeBron James recently took to twitter to ask the fans of Cleveland two questions.  James, who has become one of the more recognizable faces in sports history returned to his homestate of Ohio, where he was raised and starred on the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team fresh out of high school.  After a few lackluster seasons in Cleveland, James went to Miami, where he captured two basketball championships.

After the 2014 season, where James led the Heat to another Championship run in a losing effort, he decided to return to Cleveland in a much ballyhooed homecoming.  James, who had changed his Jersey number from 23 to 6 when he went to Miami asked fans on social media which number he should wear before this season started.  The fans of Ohio overwhelmingly voted for James to return to number 23.  James made the announcement on Instagram that he would return to wearing number 23, to the fans of Clevelands delight.

James also began a ritual of starting each game by sprinkling chalk powder into his hands (for a better grip on the ball) and tossing the excess powder into the air with both hands extended as if praying to the heavens above.  James again went to Twitter prior to he season starting and asking the fans of Cleveland if he should continue the ritual.  "According to James, 95% of fans said to bring the chalk toss back."

The advent and popularity of Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram has provided sports fans the opportunity to speak to their favorite athletes, while many athletes reciprocate like never before.  Former boxing Champion Adrian Broner, after being called out by many fans for not taking on quality opposition took to his twitter account last year to set up a voting poll for the fans to select his next opponent.  While the fans selected someone who vanquished the brash young champ, it was indicative of the era we now live in where the audience has a lot of interactions in the sporting world.

Broner uses fan twitter poll to select opponent.
