Advertising has
been around for ages, with the sole intention of informing us and persuading us
to purchase a product or service. Since media revolves so much on consumerism,
we can’t simple enjoy content without seeing some sort of ad trying to get us
to buy something.
The idea of
“branding” rose from advertising when similar products didn’t stand out to the
consumer. Branding helps a company stand out and create a defined identity in
which the consumer can easily identify them by. Branding is no longer applied
to products but also to individuals. The average person has become their own
brand on social media networks. Whatever you post, retweet, reblog, hashtag,
etc. is a reflection of who you are to the public eye. While some may see social
media as just entertainment, others are playing their cards right and turning
it into money.
In this age of the
internet, anyone can become famous overnight with the right amount of views and
exposure. An app that has proven this formula to be famous is Vine. Vine is a
six-second video app that has skyrocketed many people’s careers. Most of these
people rose up to become popular Viners and branded themselves to their
audience and eventually caught the attention of popular brands. These brands
enlisted these Viners to advertise to their audience by doing what they did
normally but would feature the product somehow and hashtag their post with the
brand’s name.
These people are the future of advertising where instead of spending billions of dollars on television commercials, companies will be enlisting the average social media user to create their own advertisements that will relate better to the audience. It's more cost-effective and encourages community engagement.
To make my point, I created a YouTube video consisting of Vine videos with a voiceover of myself explaining how advertising is shifting in the social media world. I intend to show people that everyone of us is the future and has the potential to build our own personal brand. In the end, the future of advertising depends on the audience and eventually we are no longer the audience, but also the voice.
